The i-Vu does everything it claims to do, and does so quite well. The screen is bright and the backlight is nicely adjustable. The depth of focus is not critical, allowing for easy placement and use on flat surfaces, and pretty easy use on 3D objects as well. The range of magnification (5-20X) is well suited to the screen size and hand use. The device is very compact, has good battery power, and quite simple to use for someone with reasonable vision. It should be pretty easy to learn for someone with very low vision.
The instructions are, indeed, a train wreck. Even the newer booklet still lacks even basic info as to the brigthness adjustment settings, status bar, icons which are displayed and what they mean, the very nice but totally undocumented calibrated graticule showing actual sclae (1.1 to 5.4 mm in 10 subdivisions), battery details (nickel hydride, alkaline, nicad, lithium??). It is really so very unfortunate that such a really excellent product lacks documentation, but the product CAN BE understood and totally “figured-out” with some time and effort on the part of the user.
The ONLY improvements I would personally prefer would be a wider scale of magnification (specifically 2X to 20X) rather than the present 4X to 20X) and better low light performance for use without the built-in illuminators. These are relatively minor nits, and I would personally recommend this magnifiier very highly, witholding a full 5 stars only for the reasons cited above.
